Answer engine optimization, explained

Answer engine optimization is the practice of getting your brand named and cited when AI assistants answer questions. Where SEO works to rank a page in a list of links, AEO works to be the recommendation inside the answer itself — which is a narrower contest, because an answer names two or three brands rather than ten.

Why the unit of visibility changed

A search results page gives ten organic slots. An AI answer gives two or three named brands, often with the first one carrying most of the weight. That is the whole shift: the same question now has far fewer winners, and position inside the answer matters more than position on a page.

It also changes what a win looks like. A buyer who reads that your brand has the longest warranty in the category has been influenced whether or not they clicked. The recommendation is the outcome; the visit is a side effect.

The three kinds of work

Most AEO advice collapses into one of three things, and they are not equally fast.

  • Correct the facts. Assistants repeat what they can retrieve. Outdated pricing or a feature described as missing usually traces to a real source that has not been updated. This is the fastest win available and the one most teams skip.
  • Earn citations on the sources that decide your category. In most markets a handful of sites carry the majority of citations. Being absent from them is an omission the engine has no way to correct on its own.
  • Publish pages that answer buyer questions directly. Not more content — more answerable content. A page that resolves one question in its opening lines is far easier to quote than a long essay that gets there eventually.

What AEO is not

It is not a separate channel with its own budget and its own team. Most assistants retrieve from the same web search engines index, so the work overlaps heavily with SEO and technical hygiene you may already do.

It is also not keyword optimisation with a new name. Buyers ask assistants whole questions carrying context — budget, team size, industry — and that context changes which brands get named. Tracking prompts as written is the practical difference.

How progress is measured

The honest measure is how often engines name you across a fixed set of buyer questions, weighted by where in the answer you land, and set against the competitors named on those same questions. A number without that denominator has no scale to it.

Because engines are not deterministic, a single run tells you very little. The signal is the trend across scheduled scans, which is why measurement has to be continuous rather than a one-off audit.

Questions

Is AEO different from GEO?

They describe nearly the same work. GEO — generative engine optimization — emphasises the generated text, AEO the answer it forms. Teams from content marketing tend to say GEO; teams from search tend to say AEO. The measurable outcomes are identical.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. Assistants retrieve from the indexed web, so strong search foundations remain the base layer. AEO adds a second scoreboard on top: whether the answer names you, not just whether the page ranks.

How long does AEO take to show results?

Correcting a fact on a heavily-cited source can move within weeks. Earning authority on a new source takes longer and lasts longer. Either way, scheduled measurement is what lets you tell a real change from normal variance.
