AI Overviews are built from Google's existing index, so pages that already earn strong organic visibility for a query are the likeliest to be drawn on. The summary favours material that answers the question directly and can be attributed cleanly to a source.

An overview is assembled from pages Google has crawled and ranked. That makes it unusual among AI surfaces: the work that improves your organic visibility for a query generally improves your chances of being drawn on.
It also means the technical basics still gate everything. A page that is not indexed cannot be summarised.
Quotable beats comprehensive
A summary needs a passage it can attribute. Content that states the answer plainly under a clear heading gives it one; content that circles the point for four paragraphs does not.

It does not appear on every query

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
They resolve some queries without a click, which shifts the value of visibility from traffic toward recommendation. Being named in the overview matters more than ranking below one.
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
Google-Extended in robots.txt governs whether your content informs Google's AI answers. It is separate from ordinary indexing, so opting out does not remove you from search results.
