How to get cited by AI
AI assistants cite the sources they trust for a category, and in most markets a small group carries the majority of citations. Getting cited means finding that group from your own tracked questions, then earning a place on the ones that already cite your competitors.

General lists of 'sites AI trusts' do not help
Which sources dominate varies sharply by category. In software it tends to be review sites, documentation and community threads; in health, established medical publishers. A generic list describes somebody else's market.
The list worth acting on is built from the questions your buyers ask, which means measuring before optimising.
Citation gaps are the clearest finding
A citation gap is a source that engines trust in your category, that already cites your competitors, and that has never cited you. It is unusually actionable because the work is specific and the result is measurable in the next scan.
Rank them by weight. A site cited sixty times in your category is worth far more attention than one cited twice, and treating the list as unordered is how teams end up spending a month on the wrong one.
The route in depends on the source
There is no single tactic, and pretending otherwise is why most advice here is useless.
- Review sites — claim the profile, complete it properly, and keep recent reviews coming. Incomplete profiles are the most common reason a brand is skipped.
- Listicles and comparison pages — outreach, with a concrete reason the page is wrong or incomplete without you.
- Community threads — genuine participation over time. Posting promotional replies is worse than absence.
- Documentation and directories — often just need accurate information they can find, which is the cheapest win on the list.
Questions
How long before a new citation shows up in answers?
Usually a few weeks, and it varies by engine. Engines that retrieve live reflect a new source fastest; those leaning on training take longer.
Does being cited send traffic?
Some, and less than the equivalent search ranking would. The larger value is the recommendation itself — being the brand named while a buyer decides.
Is it worth paying for placement on a review site?
Paid placement and organic citation are different things. Engines cite pages they retrieve; a complete, well-reviewed profile earns that regardless of spend, and spend without the profile work rarely does.
