Word and character counter
Paste a draft to see its word and character counts, reading and speaking time, and the words it repeats most. Character limits for X, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube and Google search results are tracked as you write, so a post or meta description can be cut to fit before it is published.

How words are counted
Text is split with the browser’s own language rules (Intl.Segmenter), the same segmentation used for text selection. Chinese, Japanese and Thai, which do not separate words with spaces, are counted correctly, and an emoji with a skin tone or a flag counts as one character rather than several.
Hyphenated words and contractions count as one word. Numbers count as words. Punctuation and symbols do not.
Nothing typed here leaves the browser. The text is not uploaded, stored or logged.
Questions
How long does it take to read 1,000 words?
About 4 minutes 12 seconds at 238 words a minute, the average silent-reading speed for adults reading non-fiction in English. Read aloud at a presentation pace of 140 words a minute, the same text takes just over 7 minutes.
What is the character limit on LinkedIn?
3,000 characters for a post. Only the first 210 or so show before the “see more” link on desktop, and fewer on mobile, so the opening line carries most of the post's reach.
Why does X show a different count?
X weights characters: every link counts as 23 characters regardless of length, and many symbols, emoji and CJK characters count as two. For plain English text without links the counts match.
How long should a meta description be?
Up to about 160 characters. Google truncates by pixel width rather than character count, so a description with many wide letters is cut sooner. Put the essential information in the first 120 characters.
Are spaces counted as characters?
Yes, in the main character count, which is how X, LinkedIn and Instagram count. The count without spaces is shown separately for submissions and translation quotes that exclude them.
