Guide

When AI gets your brand wrong

Assistants repeat what they can retrieve. A wrong price or a feature described as missing almost always traces to a real source that has not been updated. There is no correction form — the fix is to make the current fact easy to retrieve and consistent everywhere an engine looks.

Find the source before fixing anything

The instinct is to update your own site and wait. That is rarely enough, because the claim usually came from somewhere else — a review profile written two years ago, a comparison page, a forum thread.

Start from the answer: which pages did the engine cite when it made the claim? That names the source you actually need to change.

Then make the correct fact easy to retrieve

State it plainly on your own site, in a passage that stands alone. A price buried in a comparison table is harder to lift than a sentence that says what the price is.

Then get the same fact into the third-party sources the engine already cites. Consistency is what does the work: a figure that appears identically across your site, your review profiles and your documentation is far harder to contradict than one that appears once.

Expect it to take weeks, and verify

Engines that retrieve live reflect a change fastest. Those leaning more on training take considerably longer, and some claims persist until a widely-cited source is updated.

This is why the fix has to be measured rather than assumed. Re-running the same prompts on a schedule is the only way to know whether the correction landed or whether a source you have not found is still repeating the old version.

Questions

Can I ask OpenAI or Google to correct something?

There is no general correction mechanism for organic answers. The practical route is changing what the model can retrieve: your own pages, and the third-party sources it cites for your category.

Why does one engine get it right and another wrong?

They draw on different sources and different training snapshots. An engine that retrieves live will pick up a correction sooner than one answering from an older internal picture.

What if the claim is genuinely damaging?

Treat it as a source problem first — find and correct the material it came from. Where a claim is defamatory rather than merely stale, that is a legal question rather than an optimisation one.
