Where the link works
On a phone, the link opens the WhatsApp app directly. On a computer, it opens WhatsApp Desktop when installed, or WhatsApp Web otherwise. The number must have a WhatsApp account; a link to a number without one opens an error inside WhatsApp.
Add UTM parameters to the website page that carries the button, not to the wa.me link itself. WhatsApp strips query parameters other than the message, so campaign tags on the link are lost.

How do I create a WhatsApp link?
Use https://wa.me/ followed by the full number in international format, with no plus sign, spaces or leading zeros — for example https://wa.me/14155550132. Add ?text= and a URL-encoded message to pre-fill the chat. This generator handles the formatting and encoding.
Does the number need to be saved as a contact?
No. That is the purpose of a click-to-chat link: the chat opens without the person adding the number to their contacts.
Can I use a WhatsApp Business number?
Yes. wa.me links work the same way for personal and WhatsApp Business accounts.
Do the link and QR code expire?
No. The number and message are contained in the link itself, and the QR code encodes that link directly. Both work for as long as the number stays on WhatsApp.
Is the number sent anywhere?
No. The link and QR code are generated in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
