Google truncates titles by pixel width, not character count: a title of wide capitals is cut sooner than one of narrow lowercase letters. Enter the title, description and URL to see the result as it appears on desktop and mobile, with the width measured the way Google measures it.

Writing titles and descriptions

Put the page’s subject in the first 50 characters of the title. If Google rewrites or cuts it, the part that matters survives. Keep the brand name at the end.

Write the description as the answer to the search, not a list of keywords. Google rewrites descriptions it judges unhelpful for the query, and bolds the words that match it.

The same title and description are read by AI search engines when they summarise and cite a page. A specific, factual description is more likely to be quoted accurately.

Questions

How long should a title tag be?

Up to about 600 pixels wide on desktop, which is usually 50–60 characters. Width matters more than count: “WWW” is far wider than “iii”. This tool measures the pixel width directly.

How long should a meta description be?

Around 150–160 characters for desktop results. Mobile results can show slightly more. Put the essential information first, because what follows the cut-off is not shown.

Why does Google show a different title from the one I wrote?

Google rewrites titles that are too long, stuffed with keywords, or that do not describe the page well, often using the main heading instead. A concise, accurate title that matches the H1 is rewritten least.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

Not directly. It affects how many people click the result, which is what makes it worth writing well.

Where does the site name above the URL come from?

Google reads it from WebSite structured data on the home page, the og:site_name tag, or the home page title, in that order of preference.
