Local AEO
Answer engines shape their answers around where the reader is and which language they ask in, so a strong global figure routinely hides a market where nobody names you. Local AEO means running the same questions per market and treating each one as its own scoreboard.

Why one average misleads
A brand can hold forty percent visibility overall and appear in almost nothing in a market that represents a third of its pipeline. Averages hide exactly the variation you would act on.
The gaps are often larger than teams expect, because engines lean on local sources, local review sites and local-language content. A category leader in one country can be absent from the same question asked in another.
Country and language are separate axes
Asking in German is not the same as asking from Germany. Engines treat the language of the question and the apparent location of the reader as different inputs, and they can pull different sources for each.
For most businesses that means tracking the combinations that matter commercially rather than every possible pair: the languages you sell in, crossed with the countries you sell to.
Local rivals are usually different rivals
The competitors that beat you in one market frequently do not appear in your global leaderboard at all. Strong regional players with deep local coverage outrank international brands on local questions routinely.
This is useful rather than discouraging. A regional competitor's advantage almost always traces to specific local sources, and those sources are a shorter list than a global one.
Local sources decide local answers
Every market trusts its own sites — a national review platform, a trade publication, a local community. Per-market citation lists tend to be dominated by names that never appear in the global view.
Earning a place on three local sources is often faster and cheaper than competing for a slot on an international one, which makes market-by-market work a reasonable place to start rather than finish.
City-level questions behave the same way
For service-area and multi-location businesses, city-level prompts work much like country-level ones. 'Best dentist in Pune' has its own shortlist, its own sources and its own answer.
Service-area pages that name the places you actually operate in, with genuinely local detail rather than a template, are what give an engine something to retrieve for those questions.
Questions
How many markets should I track?
The ones you sell into, and no more. Each market is a separate scan, so cost scales with the count — tracking markets you have no intention of serving buys nothing.
Does translating my site fix local visibility?
It helps and rarely suffices. Answers in a market draw heavily on local third-party sources, so translation without local citations tends to move the number less than teams expect.
Is this relevant for a purely online business?
Yes, if you sell across borders. Pricing, availability and support expectations differ by market, and engines answer accordingly — which means your visibility does too.
