AEO for healthcare
Health questions are the most conservatively handled category in AI search. Assistants lean on established medical publishers and clearly credentialed authors, and routinely add advice to consult a professional — which changes what visibility looks like here.
Two questions, two completely different battles
A patient asks what recovery looks like after a knee replacement. That answer comes from medical publishers with clinical review processes, and it ends by advising them to speak to a professional. No provider is going to displace that, and trying costs a year.
The same patient then asks which clinic near them does knee replacements, what it costs privately, and how soon they could be seen. Those answers come from directories, provider pages and patient reviews, and they are genuinely winnable.
Most healthcare marketing aims at the first question because the search volume looks bigger. Almost all the commercial value sits in the second.
Les questions que posent les acheteurs
De vrais prompts de ce marché, dans les mots des acheteurs.
- “best clinic for knee replacement near me”
- “how much does a dental implant cost in the UK”
- “is this treatment covered by insurance”
- “what should I ask before choosing a physiotherapist”
- “private GP appointment same day options”
Les sources qui décident de cette catégorie
Ce à partir de quoi les réponses en healthcare sont assemblées.
Established medical publishers
Clinical information is drawn almost exclusively from sources with medical review processes, which are the hardest to displace and the most trusted.
Public health bodies
Official guidance is treated as authoritative for anything approaching clinical advice.
Provider directories
'Near me' and availability questions are answered from directories with structured location and specialty data.
Patient review platforms
Choice between providers, as opposed to clinical questions, is answered largely from review consensus.
Ce qui est différent ici
Clinical and commercial questions behave differently
Questions about a condition go to medical publishers and are effectively closed to brands. Questions about choosing a provider go to directories and reviews, and those are genuinely winnable.
Named clinical authorship matters
Content attributed to a named, credentialed clinician is weighted differently from anonymous copy. This is the category where authorship signals do the most work.
Location and availability are the real competition
Most commercially relevant health prompts are local. Accurate, structured location, specialty and availability data is what gets a provider into those answers.
Caution is built in
Expect hedging and referrals to professionals. Being named as an option within a hedged answer is the realistic target.
Ce que les équipes d'ici ratent
Les habitudes qui coûtent le plus de visibilité aux marques en healthcare.
- Competing with medical publishers on clinical content. They have review processes and decades of authority, while the provider-choice questions are where visibility is actually available.
- Publishing clinical copy with no named author. In this category more than any other, a credentialed human attached to the page is what makes it usable.
- Treating cost as unanswerable. Private pricing is the most-asked and least-answered question in the category, and a clear range beats silence.
- Inconsistent location and specialty data across directories. 'Near me' questions are answered from structured data, and disagreement between listings is why a clinic goes unnamed.
- Letting reviews go stale. Recency counts heavily when someone is choosing between two clinics that look alike on paper.
Questions
Can a health brand rank for clinical questions?
Rarely, and it is usually the wrong goal. Clinical answers come from medical publishers with review processes. Provider-choice and cost questions are where visibility is actually available.
Does author credentialing really matter?
More here than anywhere else. A named clinician with verifiable credentials attached to the content is a signal both search engines and assistants weigh heavily in this category.
How important are patient reviews?
Decisive for provider selection. Recency and volume both count, and they answer the question a patient is actually asking when choosing between two clinics.
