Installing the files

Unzip the package into the root of your site, so that /favicon.ico and the other files are served from the top level. Then paste the HTML into the <head> of every page, or your site template.

Keep favicon.ico at the root even with the HTML in place: some crawlers and email clients request /favicon.ico directly. Search engines also show the favicon next to results, which makes a recognisable mark worth the effort.

Questions

What sizes does a favicon need?

16×16 and 32×32 for browser tabs, 48×48 inside favicon.ico for Windows and search results, 180×180 for the Apple touch icon, and 192×192 and 512×512 for Android and installed web apps.

Why does the Apple touch icon have a solid background?

iOS fills transparent areas with black and applies its own rounded mask. The touch icon is therefore drawn full-bleed on a solid colour, white when the tile is transparent.

Can I make a favicon from a letter or emoji?

Yes. Choose Letter or emoji, type one or two characters, and pick colours, shape and font. The characters are sized to fill the tile at every resolution.

Which image works best as a source?

An SVG logo, or a square PNG at 512 pixels or larger. Simplify detailed logos to a single mark — fine detail disappears at 16 pixels.

Is my logo uploaded?

No. Every file is drawn and packaged in your browser.
